Playing roulette is simple: bet on a number and wait for the ball. If the ball lands on the number you placed your bet on, then you win! Too simple? Everyone thought so too. Hence, there are little details to complicate this game and make it more interesting.

Betting in Roulette

A roulette wheel in a casino comes with a roulette table. This is like a flat version of the roulette wheel, laid down and mapped out more clearly. Within the roulette table there is a betting grid. All the roulette numbers from 0 or 00 to 36 are laid out in a table of three columns and two rows. Players place their roulette bets by taking their roulette chips and placing them on their chosen spot on the roulette table. Inside bets are bets placed inside the betting grid. They have higher payouts but obviously lower chances of winning. Outside bets are placed outside the betting grid on the roulette table. Because they take up more numbers, there is a greater chance of winning – however, the payout is smaller. One can also bet on colors, number schemes, odd or even numbers, or even groups of numbers. The main rule though is that the more numbers you bet on with a single group of chips then the more chances you have of winning.

The dealer then distributes cards to the players in a clockwise manner. During the first round, each player received two cards facing down. They are to choose which of the two cards they are going to roll over to face up. Betting is initiated with the player who has the highest card rolled over. Usually, this player is also required to make a forced bet because he has the highest card. In addition to that, the ante in Mexican Poker is much higher because it is common to fold. If a minimum bet is enforced upon the game, players can only call (pay the bet to join the game), fold or raise the bet – they cannot simply check. As soon as all bets are in, the second round begins.

Players get one more card facing down, and they decide which card they choose to show. Betting follows. The same happens on for another round. During the final round, players get their fifth and final card. After the final betting round, showing of cards takes place and the highest hand according to the rules of Mexican Poker wins the game.

Before we discuss the game, let us discuss the tiles. Mahjong tiles are divided into different suites: Bamboo (red or green pegs with corresponding numbers), Circle (number of circles with floral patterns is the number of the tile), Numbers (Chinese calligraphy determines numbers), Dragon (three unique titles with Chinese calligraphy), Wind Suit (Chinese Calligraphy determines direction of wind), Flower Tiles (literally, tiles containing the images of flowers) and the Animal Suite (four tiles with one unique animal each).

Players will be seated based on the number they roll from the dice. The highest is East, and he is also the dealer. Second highest is North, then West and finally South. First, the tiles are shuffled face down on the table by all four players. Then, each player takes 36 tiles and stacks them up to two layers with 18 tiles each. These four rows are pushed together to form a square known as the Wall. Each stack is broken as each of the players picks out thirteen tiles. The rest of the tiles which are not selected are kept in the middle. The game then begins as each player draws and discards tiles from the wall with the objective of collecting any of the winning combinations, either four sets and one pair or three consecutive tiles of the same suit or even three symbol tiles that are exactly the same and finally one set of four of a kind. Each combination has a point, and each point corresponds to a certain amount of money. The first person to make the combination is declared the winner.

1.  Examine your tiles – as soon as you get your tiles, assess how far away you are from victory. What tiles do you need? How many more sets to go? If you feel you have a bad hand, then it is better that you play for a draw among the players or you play to not lose as opposed to playing to win. This means that you focus on the points and not the sets or combinations.

2.  Speed is the name of the game – For instance, if you take too long deciding on a tile before discarding it, the other players will get an idea on what hands you are playing for and what hands you need; this will instantly put you at a disadvantage.

3.  Think before you throw – do not discard a card unless you are 100% sure it will not help you form any sets in any way.

4.  Distract the pack – Stall other players from winning by tempting them to draw the cards you have discarded, even if they don’t need them.

5.  Transparency is NOT the key – You may be playing Mahjong, but try to keep a poker face on at all times. Do not express delight at drawing a discarded tile or any strong emotions over what you do, especially if it involves face up cards. Try to always keep your opponents guessing throughout the game.

1.  The player makes the crucial decision of whether he bets on the banker or on the player. The dealer (who is the banker in this scenario) holds a large rectangular button that says “banker” on one side and “player” on the other. Depending  on the player’s wager, the button is placed in front of him.

2.  The cards are dealt and the person whose sum total of the card values closest to 9 wins.

3.  The computation works this way:

?      The cards from 2 – 9 are counted with their original values (ie 2 of hearts is +2, 6 of spades is +6, etc.).

?      Aces have a value of +1.

?      10 and face cards are discarded. Their value is 0.

?      If the total of the cards are higher than 9, the number on the left is dropped. For instance, if a player gets a 9 and a 4, the total value of the cards is 13. Dropping the number on the right, his score is 3.

4.  The objective is to get a 9. The player with the score closes to 9 wins the hand; it’s as simple as that.

The house edge is minimal compared to other games. This is why Baccarat is such a great game for all ages and players of all stages.

1. Set your financial limit and make sure you stick to it, win or lose. Always be able to walk away.

2. Chat up the people from the table, be friendly. Since you aren’t fighting against each other, they will be more than willing to share the table trends from the shooters as well as the bettors.

3. Don’t bet a cent more than the minimum bet. It’s better to start small and add to it as you progress victoriously than start big and losing everything right away.

4. Assess the shooter. If he appears confident and calm, wager on the Pass Line; if he appears to be all over the place though, wager on the Don’t Pass Bar. It’s best that you know who you’re taking your chances on. If you observe the shooter to be just plain awful, then best wait for another one to step up.

5. Make the bet with one of the players in the table who looks very cautious. He should be someone who carefully sets the dice down and throws it. Roulette was the name given to Pascal’s invention. In French, the word means “small wheel” and everyone found it apt. The game started as a form of entertainment in monasteries. Legend has it that in 1842, two brothers named Francois and Luis Blanc who had just opened their first casino in Monte Carlo decided to make a deal with the devil. It is said that the brothers sold their souls to the devil in order to find out the secret of roulette, which was that if they simply add another zero tot he wheel then the house would instantly gain an edge and the players won’t even notice a thing!

In the 19^th century, the game was brought to America where another zero was added to give the house more edge. Up till today, both American and European roulette is still played in the biggest casinos around the world.

Eventually, the game was able to breach into the international market including the United States, where an American residing in China named Joseph Babcock coined the term “Mah Jongg” to call the game. He also wrote down a set of simple rules for others to be able to play the game with. Babcock was also responsible for translating the design of tiles, which has Chinese characters, for the English speaking population to understand.

Its popularity peaked in 1923 and the imported tiles became China’s sixth largest source of income from exporting. Its net value stood at 1.5 million US dollars – which, at that time, is an unbelievably large sum. When the craze peeked, American sports stores would literally ask their employees to go to China with a huge bag of gold and orders to buy every single Mahjong tile set they could get their hands on. From a simple game created by a bored prisoner, these beautiful tiles have now reached the whole world to enjoy.

1.  When you bet on one number, that is called a straight-up bet. This means your bet earns 35 times its original worth. The numbers are from 1 – 36 including 0 and 00.

2.  When you bet on two numbers – that is, placing your chip/s on the line between two numbers, this is a split bet. This means your bet earns 17 times its original worth if the ball lands on either number.

3.  When you bet on three numbers – that is, placing your chip on the line where a group of three numbers meet, this is a trio bet. This means your bet earns 11 times its original worth. There are only a few numbers where trio bets can be done, such as the 10 – 11 – 12 group.

4.  When you bet on four numbers – that is, placing your chip on a corner where four numbers meet, this is a corner bet. This means your bet earns 8 times its original worth if the ball lands on any of the four numbers.

5.  When you bet on five numbers – that is, placing your chip on a corner where five numbers meet, this is a five number bet. This means your bet earns 6 times its original worth if the ball lands on any of the four numbers. However, this is the worst bet of all in the game of roulette because there is only one possible 5-number combination for this bet: 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3! This increases that house edge by almost 8% and is definitely not worth it.

6.  When yo bet on six numbers – that is, placing your chip at the meeting point of two groups of three numbers, this is a six number bet. This means your bet earns you 5 times its original worth.

Other bets that do not involving betting on numbers directly are column bets and dozen bets, which pay out twice the your bet’s original worth and odd/even, high/low or red/black bets which pay out with a 1 – 1 percentage.

DO know that there are three kinds of Baccarat games. First, there is Punto de Blanco wherein the casino / dealer is always the banker. Second, there is Chemin de Fer wherein either the casino or the player can be the banker provided that the player continuously bets and does not declare bankruptcy. Once he does, he forfeits the right to be the banker. Third and last, we have Baccarat Banque wherein the player the player can choose to be the player or banker, and he can also choose to resign from his post as the banker at any moment. Casinos do not all follow one set of guidelines, so it would be best to know the terms of a casino before placing bets.

DON’T always bet on a tie when playing a Baccarat Punter, wherein you get to bet on the outcome of the game without being player or banker. Though the payout is large, the chances are slim for winning as the house advantage is high. Only bet on the tie if you’re feeling extra lucky!

DO remember that the crowd is always taking the side of the player because players have a higher advantage.
